He's gone all soft
Ian Horrocks takes the headlines this week with his breakthrough using the new Wilson DX2 SOFT golf ball. The balls arrived in stock last week and Ian was the first customer to give them a try. He says "you can hardly feel them come off the club face, they're amazing and I will be purchasing some more.
Ian and playing partner Malcolm Barr scored 38 points over 14 holes in the senior's competition on Thursday. Congratulations guys, I'll be stocking up for you!
Known on twitter as @StamfordTaxMan Mr Martin Dwyer, the sweet swinging golf enthusiast otherwise known as the Greens Chairman, accumulated 39 points over 18 holes to clear the field by one shot.
Standing alone, that won him the full 20 points in the Opening event of the winter league.
The Winter league was a new introduction last year and a great success, to the degree we've introduced it as a Pro Shop major. If you haven't entered, it isn't too late, enquire in the Pro Shop.
Sundays Opening result:
1 - Martin Dwyer 39
2 - Brian Thomas 38 cpo
3 - Steve Finan 38
There were NO TWOS in the opening event, therefore there will be a £42 roll over on this coming Sunday. Remember, if you're not in the Winter league, you are still eligible to play in the shop competition, you just won't win any league points.
Captains Vs Presidents
As we enter the most traditional month of the year, Golf becomes a gathering rather than a competitive meeting. Well maybe not totally, but to a certain degree. And for that matter, we tend to enjoy games on Saturdays rather than competitions with the Captains V's Presidents fast approaching and The Christmas Cracker just around the corner.
The Captains v's Presidents is an event which has been in the calendar for the whole 9 years I have personally been involved with the club, and most probably for many years before too. Traditionally, each member enters his name as per usual on the competition sheet, although this time it is a shot Gun start format at 10:30am. The Captain & President pick their teams from the displayed names until they reach an even amount of golfers' on each side. It then goes to a betterball Matchplay between the Captains team Vs the Presidents team over 18 holes.
At the close of each game, it's a shake of the hands and congratulations to the winning pairs, but all isn't over, as the losing Side buy Lunch. You may well have been victorious over your opponents, but if the remainder of your team lose, you are responsible to buy Lunch for the winning side.
Some may think that sounds harsh… read on.
Each losing pair, have to stand and make a speech in great humour, detailing their game and how they got beat. If you've never taken part in this event before, I can highly recommend putting it in your diary. It is one not to be missed! It's worth turning out just to listen to Bernhard Wilcox tell us another Joke!
Manchester Alliance
It's been a wet start to the week, with heavy rain through Sunday & Monday, although the Manchester alliance still went ahead. This week staged at Leigh Golf Club, the wet conditions coupled with the fallen leaves, hitting the fairways was the only option.
Steve Finan & Danny Fox once again showed great form scoring 43 points between themselves and taking top spot in the Am Am pairings. The best score in the Pro Am Pairings was 42 points, which really highlights the quality of golf they must've played. Notching up multiple wins on the Manchester Alliance tour, they've become a familiar face at the presentations, and are now featuring on the Amateur Order of merit. Maybe next time Danny Fox will do the speech though!
The pro's individual score went to my good self, with a 66 gross (-3) to win by 1 shot from 4 pros tied on 67 (-2). That win collected me 60 points in the Order of merit and moved me up the league into 8th place.
You can read more on that event on the news page of the Manchester alliance: http://www.mdga.org.uk/news.html
Karting
All wasn't finished at the climax of the Golf. As we were local to Team Sport Karting and in true Stamford Golf Club style, we carried our competitiveness across the town and put hot wheels to tarmac. At the chequered flag the debates were comical, lads blaming the Karts and some blaming the weight difference. Although the lightest man in the group took pole position, making it two wins in one day for Danny Fox.
That theory wasn't quite accurate for last position though, as he shall remain nameless but with experience of driving fast cars, it bared no advantage on that evening!
Great day lads, thank you. If anyone is interested in taking part in a Manchester alliance event, or even some of the activities we get involved with, please contact me.
Until next week, Happy Golfing!
