Junior Development
I remember coming to Stamford back in October 2006. One of the main concerns was to develop the youth section. We introduced weekly junior coaching and held competitions on a weekly basis, and slowly but surely the numbers began to increase. We attracted some very talented youth of which majority remain a member today. Some of the names such as Taylor Yates, Spencer Yates, Josh Ainscough, Archie Palmer & James Kempster are a few of which all have a fantastic ability to play the game of Golf.
One thing that these youngsters all have in common, they took part in the BMW Junior challenge team trophy each year, managing to bring home the silverware to Stamford in 2013 for the first time. Nowadays these youngsters are developing into their late teens and qualifying to compete in the Dunham Forest Trophy. A competition many of you will be familiar with, especially following our recent success by reaching the semi-finals. A distance unmatched by the club for 35 years in the competition. The most recent team achievement is the Tameside and district League champions for 2015. Yet another great achievement from the team.
Will Biddle
The Balfour Cup is another local competition which is a Singles format.
It has been played for since 1954 and this year it was staged at Sale Golf Club on 13th September.
Will Biddle from Stamford Golf Club was the name at the top of the leader board by the end of the day. Will is a relatively new member, been taking lessons and joined the club approximately 18 months ago.
His Gross score of 83 less his 20 handicap, left him with a Nett score of 63, which was untouched by any other competitor and landed himself his first piece if silverware.
In the under 19s competitions, our junior captain Spencer Yates carried his good form forward with a runner up position with a gross 72 nett 66.
Archie Palmer
The most recent news has emerged today, as long standing junior member Archie Palmer (playing off a handicap of 2) took trials for North of England UNDER 16s squad where he was successful to make the grade. Archie made his mark in the North of England under 16s where he finished in 2nd place from a field of 164 golfers all of whom play off a handicap of 5 or lower. Watch this space for his national debut.
B Team delight
It is becoming a regular occurrence that I get to write about one of our teams. If the A team aren't winning the league, the Dunham team are on a March and if that isn't the case the B team are giving us something to write about. This year it is Congratulations to Stamford GC B team on winning their semi-final league play off against Fairfield GC on Saturday 26th September. They won the match 3 - 2 and now play Ashton GC in the final on the weekend of the 10th or 11th October venue to be confirmed. Team Captain Tony Bowden said,
"All of the team players have played great golf throughout the season leading their half of the league and deserve to be in the final and I am proud to be their captain."
Good luck in the final Boys!
