Dunham deflate
All is said in the title really, but only the spectators on the day will truly understand how close we came. From early doors on the day the result was pretty clear that it was going down to the wire. Stamford were convincingly up in 3 games while Bramhall Park were convincingly up in 3 games also. That left one game remaining, the Professionals at the back of the field.
After 15 holes of competitive golf, big drives and towering iron shots into greens, we had three holes to play and we were all square.
16th Craig had the tee after I failed to get up and down on 15. He hit his stock shot Fade down the centre of the fairway moving into the right semi. I took 3 Wood and pulled it a little, but left was better than right. That left me to play first and apply the pressure, right into the heart of the green to 18ft. Craig had overhanging trees and came up short in a greenside bunker where he failed to get up and down, leaving me with 2 putts to win the Hole… where I managed to take 3 and only manage a half.
17th Craig's Tee once again and straight down the middle it went, followed by myself. On the angle it was me to play first which I did and put it 15ft from the pin, followed by Craig who put it to 14ft. after walking around the putt, I noticed the crowd had formed into approximately 70 people, the pressure was on and my ball went straight into the hole for a birdie 3. Craig slid by and I was 1 up with 1 to play.
18th My tee shot went straight down the left, absolutely text book tee shot. Craig once again down the middle but took a sharp kick to the right under some overhanging trees. I played my 2nd into what looked about 20 ft., right into the heart of the green. Craig to play and a birdie required. Through the trees, I heard twigs and leaves then a ball came to rest approximately 6ft from the pin… a great shot under such pressure. My Putt is one that will stay with me for many years to come, I had a 30ft putt to win the match, I set it off on the perfect line with the perfect pace, and it lipped the hole and sat on the edge... I almost could see my ball pulling its tongue out at me.
Craig went on to roll his 6ft birdie putt in for the win and took the match into extra holes. I short sided myself down the right of the green and left a tough approach shot when I proceeded to make Bogey. That was good enough for Bramhall Park and onwards they went into the Final.
A Message from the Captain
It is with great pleasure that I get to congratulate the Dunham Forest team on the gallant efforts this year.
To reach the finals day in my year as captain was a moment I will cherish for many years to come.
I do wish the result had turned in our favour, although I'm sure the actual result will give the team confidence and hopefully one day the Dunham Forest trophy will return to Stamford Golf Club.
John Sharples - Captain, Stamford Golf Club
Christmas is coming
A long standing tradition of the club is fast approaching. The new vice-captain elect will be chosen from the past captains, in an annual meeting scheduled in November. The Chosen one then publically accepts his position on Christmas day where we gather for festive drinks in the clubhouse, raise our glasses and celebrate together. Not just for the new appointment, but simply because at Stamford we are a family. That is what makes this club so unique and different from the rest.
How about this year we make a conscious effort to break some records? Let's make a visit to the club, buy a raffle ticket from the pro, shake the new vice captains hand and be home in time for Dinner. You will be no longer than 2 hours, and I can assure you, you will leave smiling. Maybe we can fill the bar? Go on... spread the word.
Are you using the right Golf Clubs? I see it week in week out, golfers with a bargain they've been offered. Only the Bargain is the equivalent of a packet of nuts to someone with an allergy, but hey... they got a deal. Let that sink in and think about it. Are you using the right clubs for your game?
Right here at Stamford Golf Club, I have potentially the finest piece of technology in the world that offers me the data I require to help any golfer with their game. I can advise whether your clubs are too flexible, too stiff, too long, too short, too heavy or too light. As well as adjusting the lie angles and lofts. Couple these benefits together and you have an improved game of golf.
