Winter League Miraculously week 13 of the Winter League was a goer this weekend with a record number of entries... and what a result I have got to report. Six months ago, a gentleman walked into my shop and requested a fitting for 3 new woods, a driver, 3 wood & 5 wood. Out we went onto the lesson bay fully equipped with the latest technology in GC2 (launch monitor). Several balls into the fitting and slowly it started to turn into a golf lesson, with myself offering advice how a technique change would offer more to the player’s game at that moment than just some new clubs. With that advice, week 13 Winter League winner Chris Montgomery decided to undergo a swing change before he committed to an investment of some new clubs. 7 months down the line and Chris is 7 lessons in. His progress has been gradual with his scores increasing weekly and this week he managed to take advantage of 49 fellow members to top the weekly leaderboard. Albeit Chris has a lot of work in the closing 6 weeks to have any chance in the seasonal prize of the Winter League, but I think this is a sign of what's to come in 2018 from the gentle giant. Runner up was Birthday boy Mick Cheadle who also managed 43 points only to be beaten on a card playoff. Third place was also by card playoff and was Wayne Morris on 42 points after he nosed out the club Chairman and past Captain Mr. Steve Lennon. Elsewhere in the Winter League and right at the top of the leaderboard is Steve Moores. Steve is once again untouched at the top with the Yellow Jersey, but there are certainly several players moving in on the low handicapper as more players reach the 8 score tally required for the league. But has Steve made a fatal error at week number 13, after signing for a wrong gross score (one more than he actually taken, so the score stands and is not a disqualification). Yes, Steve had signed his card on hole 7 for a gross score of 4 when he actually made a birdie 3. The confusion was at the bottom of the card when the total added up to what he thought was correct. As the rule states, the player is responsible for gross score on the card and not the adding up..... Could that point be fatal come Sunday the 18th March.
Finally, a huge shout out to Dave Rawlinson for shooting his personal best score of 36 points! A fantastic achievement at such an early stage of your golfing career. It won't be long before I’m reporting you to H&C for handicapping reductions!
