Hello golfers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, it’s been a couple of weeks since I last managed to put a club newsletter together and during that time plenty has happened. In this week’s newsletter we talk knockouts, I report back from last week’s Manchester Alliance event, the Winter League gets underway, and we have a Motocaddy promotion which is perfect for Christmas. It’s a knockout

We have recently seen the final of the summer singles knockout which was held between Anthony Cavanagh & Spencer Yates. At the halfway stage of the 36 hole final, it was Cavanagh who held the advantage and he managed to turn the screw a little more in the second round to finish the match a claim victory on the 14th green. Congratulations to both players on reaching the final.

As the summer final came to a conclusion, entry to the Winter pairs KO has opened which you can enter behind the bar. My entry was in on the second day with my carefully chosen playing partner and fellow droylsdonian, Garry Foster. I think this year our aim is the get past round 1, fingers crossed!

In the 14 year history that I have taken part in the Manchester alliance, I cannot ever remember the same pairing winning 3 times on the spin. Next Wednesday we will be visiting Warrington Golf Club where newbie Rick Margrave and playing partner Paul Traynor will be pegging it up in their attempt to make some history, in a bid to make it 3 wins on the spin. Their 46 stableford betterball points this week at Haydock Park Golf Club to claim their second victory in as many weeks was good enough to win by a card playoff.

 With a total of 22 points better than their suggested handicap, I think I might stay in work next week. However, as a message from myself to the lads themselves, it’s great to see and long may it continue!

Winter League - Week 1

Sunday golf has taken off with the newly introduced Winter League. The 18 holes Singles stableford competition has gone from strength to strength as it enters its 4th season. This season being its strongest entry to date with 50 entries all paying £10 to set up a £500 Winter League prize fund. I do believe the initial teething problems have been ironed out and this year we are set ready for an electric finish like last year. I would urge all entries to take note of the above sentence, making sure you enter the Winter KO to take full advantage of the Winter League as the Winter KO extra points could be vital come the end of the season.

Queuing just three behind on 41 points was Kev Duffy, Dave Mills and 1 shot further back Steve Finan. Last year’s runner up, Chris Exton, got himself off to a slow start with 30 points, a score he’ll be hoping to replace by the 9th week. New comer from Didsbury Golf Club, Danny Jebb, the pharmacist now living in Stalybridge managed to negotiate 39 points in his opening competitive round. He could be one to watch come the final week in March.

The weather looks promising for week 2 of the winter league this coming weekend and I’m sure it will deliver some exciting stories.. but who will be wearing the Yellow Jersey on week 3?... Stay tuned!
