Rabbits
Two weeks behind in reporting the rabbits matches with both matches coincidently against the same side with one at home and one away. Match reports from the Team Captain read:
"This week saw us in action away at Dukinfield. Yours truly and Paul Barlow battled to an honourable draw. Giving 3 shots to our opponents (Duky Captain) Kev Brown and Phil Lord also drew (giving 2 shots). The rest of the team didn't fare so well and the final result was an 8/2 loss away. We play them next week at home in the league so it's a good chance for revenge, I'm hoping."
The return leg report wasn't too disappointing to read:
"A 5/3 home win in the league against Dukinfield. Top of the tree was Neil Angus and myself with a 5 and 4 win."
MDGA Senior KO Vs Ashton
Always a difficult draw away in any knock out competition, but a sad 3/2 loss saw Ashton under Lyne move through to the next round. Congratulations to them and good luck in the next round.
Barry Sidebottom Memorial Golf Day
Amazing scenes this weekend as Sunday saw 124 golfers turn out to remember a legend, the late Barry Sidebottom. Barry was one of the best golfers to turn through Stamford Golf Club with a career crossing the county, a personality better than his golf swing (which says a lot) and a smile wider than my drive off the 17th tee on Saturday.
All for a good cause, the event, which is scheduled to repeat annually, found its opening winner in Mick Thompson. Showing more of his face in the evenings and putting some time into his golf swing recently, it was no surprise his card finished on top of the pile after an opening 9 hole score of 39 and a back 9 of 37, giving Mick a total of 77 minus his handicap of 11 to claim the outright lead by a shot on 66. Another keen golfer was just one shot back with an opening 9 of 41 only to return in level par 35 for a 76 gross total.
- Winner: Mick Thompson (77 - 11 = 66)
- Runner up: Chris Easter (75 - 8 = 67)
- 3rd place & Best visitor: John Connery (88 - 21 = 67)
- 4th place: Mr Captain (Andy Yeardly) (79 - 11 = 68)
Best gross in tough conditions was our very own Andy Bent with 68.
Wives also contributed their part with collecting charity donations and running a raffle in the clubhouse which raised over £400 to the chosen charity. A total of over £1600 in all was raised for Macmillan Cancer support, a charity close to the hearts of the Sidebottom family.
Wednesday 18 hole Stableford
Perfect conditions and an absolute credit to the Greenkeepers as the course played possibly as well as I have ever known it. Jon White managed to make the most of the day with 40 points with a back 9 of 23 points. In second place was in-form Jamie Chadwick with 38 points playing off 2. Beaten on a card playoff for 2nd was Pete Grogan also on 38 points.
June Monthly Medal
Not the largest prize on offer but indirectly a chance for a major which is a large prize, the Gold medal. Divisional winners Rob Irving, Russell Lodge and Bob Bloomer (yes Bob Bloomer), have secured their place in the Gold Medal in 2018.
Division 1: Bob Irving 73 - 8 = 65
Division 2: Russell Lodge 79 - 16 = 63
Division 3: Bob Bloomer 86 - 21 = 65
Congratulations fellas and great Golf!
