Wednesday Stableford
Today was my first walk around 18 holes in a few weeks, thank you to our new assistant pro Vince Whelan. Vince is offering some time around the shop and very much learning the roll, so bear with him should I not be around, I'm sure he'll be accredit to our team.
Out on the course was interesting. After leaving the clubs in my locker for a few months, the course looked different. Trees had grown considerably taller and wider, creating tighter tee shots and approach shots. Firm conditions demanded good ball striking and the greens being receptive to good shots. For me personally a 72 gross felt reasonable after a very disappointing performance on the whole, but Jamie Chadwick managed to continue his astounding form with a gross 66. Possibly a course record for the new layout?
Only Carlton Weldon could manage to rain on someone's parade by going one shot better for 44 stableford points and to claim top prize in the stableford. Congratulations to two great lads.
1-2-3
A double stroke of fortune for the winning team of Paul Barlow, Steven Moores and Mike Hewitt after their side-bet with another team came short to find themselves in the runners up position, only for Competition administrator Colin Kershaw to realise the winning cards was marked incorrectly resulting in DQ, the two dreaded letters of any competitor.
A Team Matches
It's been a surprisingly difficult season so far for the A team, after triumphing last season they currently sit at the bottom of the premier division having managed a draw against Brookdale Golf Club on home soil. The first two matches off the course resulted in favour of the visitors, but a strong finish was required and achieved from Captain Kev Duffy and his men to hold a 4-4 result.
This week I am lead to believe it was a cup match week, of which Mr Duffy & Co had been drawn away at Saddleworth Golf Club against Oldham. The result this time favouring the mighty Stamford with a 3-2 victory.
Rabbits
Elsewhere, the Rabbits have been giving us some exciting writing material with convincing victories at home and away, but not this week. Away at Houldsworth, Captain Julian Davidson had an early bath with an 8-0 team thrashing. Not to worry boys, there's always next time!
B Team
The B team report this week is delayed due to a late kick off in the Team Cup knock out, scheduled to be played Thursday evening. Last weeks B team performance was worth catching up with as SGC and team captain Paul Traynor took a slight beating 5-3. On paper that looks worse than it actually is, with 3 points in the league on any away soil is a bonus.
