Past Captains nomination
So how do we elect our next Mr. Captain here at Stamford Golf Club? Well if I told you the procedure was an annual tradition, I'm sure you wouldn't be surprised, as here at Stamford traditions are very strong.
Going forward is the decision of who have already served, therefore, the past captains have their very own day dedicated to nominating the Vice-Captain elect. They arrange a 12 hole game of golf on a specified date, usually around mid-November, then take to the dining table where discussions are made and names are nominated. That then turns into a debate to reduce the numbers of those worthy of the honourable role of the red jacket. Finally they reduce the names to just three, which all past captains then vote 1, 2 & 3. Those votes are passed to the captain with no result. That result is kept extremely discrete until 12:30 on Christmas Day when it is announced. So if that hasn't left you in anticipation of who it could possibly be, be sure to turn up on Christmas Day to find out.
For those members who have never been a part of this great tradition, I can highly recommend spending an hour at the club having a pint and welcoming the vice-captain elect.
I'm keen to hear your thoughts on who it could possibly be. Email me professional@stamfordgolfclub.co.uk I will announce your predictions next week.
Just 7 weeks ago (8th October) we received a betterball stableford score of 50 points from Tony McClusky & playing partner Neil Angus to win the Saturday Stableford competition by 3 shots. On Sunday 27th November Wayne Morris almost tied that score... on his own! Albeit the conditions were perfect, the 17th was off the forward tee and maybe a couple of other shorter holes, however, that doesn't always favour a better score. In any case, let's not get away from Mr. Morris and the 48 points subject... A score good enough to win the competition by some 5 points from playing partner Nick Rabbeth.
Here's what Wayne had to say.
So how is the new winter handicapping system standing up to all these good scores? We have seen some reductions in the first 4 weeks in actual fact the number of winter playing handicaps reduced is 24! That's not counting those reduced by a decimal that hasn't yet affected the playing handicap. One of which is Wayne Morris with his infamous 48 points. The handicaps chairman had his surgical gloves on when he dealt with that one!
Nixon back on the big stage
His 6th year as a professional and possibly his worst. His 5th visit to tour school and his 4th succession. Those statistics don't doubt that Matthew Nixon's future lies on the big stage. He's worked hard on technique changes, fitness, and mental strength & putting. I think above all, the experience Matt has picked up over the last 5 years are developing him into the top class professional that he is. On that note, take interest in Matts start to his 2017 season at leopard creek this week in South Africa by clicking this link.
Stableford winners 26th November 2016
Division 1: Adam Carr 30
Division 2: Julian Davidson 27
Division 3: Eddie Tapper 30
The 12 hole stableford on Saturday attracted maximum numbers again, this time missing holes 2, 3,4,6,7 & 18. Adam Carr & good friend Eddie Tapper individually topped their divisions 1 & 3 respectively, while 27 stableford points was good enough for Julian Davidson in division 2.
