Hello golfers,

Tip of the week

The course is playing longer

It doesn't need us to tell you that the ball isn't travelling as far as it was a couple of months ago; the combination of cooler air and less roll on the softer fairways makes the course a lot different to how it was in the summer.

So, if you're trying to find some extra yards off the tee, to save yourself going in with long irons and hybrids, these tips may help you:

1. Tee your ball a little higher and move it forward in your stance to encourage an upward angle of attack, therefore adding loft.

2. Grip the club a little lighter than usual, which will help your wrists hinge more easily for a steeper angle of attack to promote a higher flight.

3. Load more weight onto your right side than usual, which also creates a steeper swing for longer carries.

We're here to help you get the most enjoyment out of the game, so if you'd like some further assistance, get in touch or speak to us in the shop.

This time of year is often the best period to work on your game ahead of spring…. it'll come around fast and you'll want to be ready for those big comps.

Competition news

Single Stableford

There were some tough conditions this weekend with only 57 entries in the November monthly medal. The divisional competition started pretty grimly with heavy rain and almost unplayable conditions. However by midday things had improved and play became a little more consistent through the draws. The divisional winners are as follows:

Division 1: Dave Furness 50 - 8 = 42, Division 2: Tom Howe 49 - 9 = 40 and Division 3: Paul Barlow 55 - 13 = 42.

Winter League / Winter Knock Out

It was week 2 and we had perfect conditions for the 18 hole winter league. Opening his bid to retain his winter title for a third year running was Paul Traynor. He carded 33 points but there's a long way to go at this point for that to make much difference. Following a deluge of rain the previous day, the course withstood this test and remained in fine condition, as Phil Ramsden (pictured below) took full advantage posting 43 points to claim first prize by 1 shot. Close behind was Rick Irving with 42 points, Regain Glaister in 3rd place on 40 points beating Pete Wilkinson on a card play off.

Taking advantage of the first two weeks is Brian Thomas as he leads the Ice Man Challenge by 3 from Kev Barber in second place on 78 points and Alex Martin & Steve Moores tied for third place on 77.

A gentle reminder, there are Winter League points up for grabs via the Winter Knock Out. Entries close soon so contact us in the pro shop or the competitions chairman (Chris Akers) for more details. If you're a lone player, let us know so we can fix you up.
