Pros away Day
It's that time of year again, the annual away day. The day in the calendar year you can officially let your hair down, have a laugh, play some golf and have a booze. It's been difficult deciding on the venue, for what is best value for money. Taking into consideration the quality of the golf course, food, and distance to travel and changing facilities, combined with the cost of the event, my final choice was Swinton Park located just off the A580. The date is set for Friday 2nd September 2016.
Swinton is an 18 hole golf course with a good reputation for food, drink and good greens. It has staged professional golf tournaments and top amateur events too, so I'm intrigued what scores will return on the day.
I have reserved the tee for 52 golfers, all of which I aim to fill in a matter of no time. If you feel you deserve a good day off work, fancy letting your hair down and having a laugh, please contact me with a £20.00 none refundable deposit to confirm your place.
The cost of the day is just £60.00 for a package bursting with value.
A return coach will pick us up from Stamford Golf Club and return us back to the very same spot. On arrival Bacon Roll & Coffee will be served followed by 10 holes of golf. Soup & Sandwiches will be awaiting your return from your morning round, then back out onto the first tee for 18 holes with a two course meal on your return. A neat little presentation of the losing choppers on the day followed by the return coach back to SGC.
Yes… £60.00, so don't hang around as this event fills fast!
Major number one
The nearly men struck again at the weekend, both Steve Moores & Brian Thomas as Rookie member Andrew Angelone came up top trumps.
Brian Thomas was 4 up playing 17 left with a 6" tap in to go 5 up which he callously attempted to finish off with one hand. Much to his disappointment the ball refused to drop and only a half was achieved from such a good opportunity. Brian went on to finish +4 in the annual Bogey major of the year to match that of Steve Moores, yet another player in form who has had his very near misses recently.
Andrew Angelone was the man on the day as he posted an unbeatable +5 to achieve his first major. The hard hitting ball striker from Stalybridge was made up with his win and hopes to take the confidence into the second half of the summer.

Physio corner Are you in or out?
Calm down, it's not Brexit talk. It's swing plane talk. Far more interesting. If you are a fighting a slice, and it's getting worse not better, it might be down to your shoulder turn. Which has nothing to do with shoulders. It's all to do with spinal flexibility. Restricted back rotation will lead to your arms trying to do the rotation, which leads to "a reverse pivot" which leads to a weak, usually out to in, swing plane. The result is poor distance and a slice. If you don't improve your flexibility it will be all but impossible to train yourself to eliminate this unwanted shot.
A decent drill to improve flexibility, which could be done during a warm up, but should be done more frequently than a few times a week, is to put a long club behind your neck (like you are going to squat with the golf club), and get into position as if you are addressing a golf ball. Now, try swinging in this position. Your arms can't help, they are attached to the club, so you relying on spinal movements. Make sure the club is rotating around your body, and one end is not ending up pointing towards the sky. Swing backwards and forwards 10-15 times.
Now flexibility alone won't make you a better golfer, but next time you book a lesson you'll find it easier to rotate, get more from your lesson, and get more distance.
