Hello golfers,
Lombard Trophy
Near two weeks has passed since our annual qualifier for the National Pro Am, The Lombard Trophy qualifier. The event attracts entries from more than 1,000 clubs, has more than 100,000 amateurs taking part and requires 16 regional finals to cater for the huge demand.
Its appeal however is obvious, for the amateur there is pride, prestige and honour of representing their club in a national event. That's before we mention the 7 day trip to the sunshine for the 16 regional finalists. While for the professional, it could be healthy wage bonus.
This year representing Stamford very nearly was Rick Irving... Until one of the last men out Mr. Anthony Sharples posted the best score of all three divisions 76 Gross - 10 = 66 Nett.
That was good enough to secure his place in the regional qualifier, partnering myself at one of the UKs finest golfing experiences, Formby Golf Club on Thursday 21st July.
The winning pro-am pairing from there will Jet off To The Vila Sol Golf resort in Vilamoura, Portugal to participate in the grand finale, which boasts a £41,450 prize fund.
Congratulations Anthony, Bring on Formby!

Seniors update
- Congratulations to The Seniors' section winning their first match of the season at Mellor & Townscliffe on Monday 25th April 4.5 - 3.5
- Back home at Stamford Golf Club in the seniors section, Mr Raymond Armstrong managed to top the Presidents prize in a card play-off from Geoff Etchells and Billy Mckenna who both also carded scores of 38 points.
Hopefully you're all starting to enjoy a bit more golf now that we're into spring. In an effort to help you shoot lower scores, we'd like to share a few wedge play secrets.
One of the biggest causes of loose ball striking is poor ball positioning. So…
1. Check your ball is positioned correctly under your sternum (pictured below).
2. Now, you need to stay balanced and avoid swaying with your backswing. Leaning back to help the ball up moves the bottom of your swing arc away from the ball.
3. Once you're set-up correctly, it's about trusting the loft of your wedge to do its job. A good way to guarantee this is to take a divot after the ball, which should also help create spin for added control.
